Livelihood and Environment Ghana – LEG is legally registered in Ghana as research and advocacy not-for-profit and Non-Governmental Organization established in July, 2004 in response to the growing environmental and human rights threats from operations of mines.
LEG which began with one community; Ahafo Kenyasi No.2 in the Ahafo Region of Ghana now operates in 46 communities in seven (7) administrative regions in Ghana namely Bono, Ahafo, Western North, Ashanti, Central, Eastern and Western. LEG ever since has been working to promote community rights, environmental sustainability, Sustainable livelihood for marginalized people in society particularly, women, youth and persons with disability. LEG also engage with policy-makers and duty-bearers to promote natural resources governance in the area of transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, sustainability and equitable distribution of mineral dividends. We conduct periodic research, we submit policy proposals to policy makers and advocacy in the mineral sector, capacity-building and training of mining affected communities on mining laws and minerals governance.
We engage in health, water and sanitation including HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and education on stigmatization, child health, maternal health and infrastructural development in the health sector.
We also create awareness on Climate change, train farmers and communities on mitigation and adaptation strategies and indigenous techniques for mitigating climate change, we undertake afforestation, reforestation projects and campaign for biodiversity conservation towards reducing impacts of climate change
We provide sustainable livelihoods skills training for rural communities and marginalized people (women, girls, youth and (PWD) and women economic empowerment.
We train and educate communities (women and Girls) on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Community Rights, Women and Children’s Rights and provide litigation services for victims.
We promote active citizenship and participation in the electoral and political processes with special emphasis on marginalized groups (Women, PWD and the Youth).
The organization has two offices; one in Sunyani in the Bono Region and the other one in Ahafo Kenyasi No.2 in the Ahafo Region with five permanent staff and three volunteers. We also have twenty-seven Community Volunteers (CVs) within the 46 communities in the seven regions who serve as intermediaries between their communities and LEG.
LEG has a Nine (9)-member board which consists of four (4) females and five (5) males with Professor Mercy Adutwumwaa Derkyi as the chair of the Board and Dr. Erica Kumah MacGranaham as vice-chair and Professor John Adu Kumi as Secretary and other six members including the Executive Director. The Board is the highest decision-making body responsible for determining the organisation’s strategic direction, key policy decisions and overseeing the overall direction of the organisation.
